It’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors! Every Sunday, a bunch of writers post 8-10-sentence snippets from their works-in-progress on their blogs. There’s a lot of reading, commenting and great writing. Click on the link to see the full list.
The scene below happens the day after last week’s snippet. Here is the event they refer to.
Meanwhile, Dave telephoned Beth. “Hi, beautiful, guess what—I did some research last night. Remember how it stuck its horn in the water?”
“Yeah.”
“It was purifying the water. Hundreds of years ago, artists painted scenes of unicorns putting their horns in water to pull poison out of it.”
“So that’s what it was doing.”
“Beth, think about it–if we could catch the unicorn, we could take it wherever there was polluted water and we could detoxify it. People would pay good money for that; we could even get government contracts. We could contact the television stations, and they would send their news crews out to interview us–think of the free publicity.”
And here is a tapestry from around 1500 which depicts a scene like the one referred to:
I know it’s short (the limit is ten sentences), but what do you think of this small excerpt from Chapter 13? Any suggestions on how I can make it better? Please leave your comments below.
What a neat concept! I was worried for the unicorn as they started listing the ways to exploit it (but also so creative pulling modern issues and lore together). Looking forward to coming back here and seeing where this leads.

The story is set in 1967–about five years after Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” came out.

This scene scared me and I hope Hilary can protect the unicorn from this greedy couple.

Don’t worry, Betty–it gets worse.

Cool concept, but I can’t say I approve of his idea.

So he wants to exploit the unicorn and make millions off of it? I’m really not liking this guy! I hope Beth puts an end to his schemes! Love the tapestry.

I love the tapestry, too–it’s one of a collection of related tapestries at The Cloisters in New York City.

Unicorn powers should be used for good! Hope these people don’t get their way.

I like the idea of the unicorn purifying water, but his plans to make a fortune from it is kind of the opposite of the whole idea of the unicorn.

This guy is up to no good with this poor unicorn. I hope she gets him in check! Visiting the Cloisters was one of my favorite highlights at an RWA conference trip to NYC some years ago.

I know! Isn’t The Cloisters amazing? You don’t even know you’re in New York City. And the views of the Hudson River from the terrace–what a feast for the eyes. Have you seen Norm 2.0’s photographs of the doorways?
