Tuesday Photo Challenge: Radiance Outdoors

Tuesday Photo Challenge: Radiance Outdoors

Yesterday at about six o’clock I was sitting outside in the backyard when I noticed the way the sun, low in the sky, was shining on my neighbor’s palm tree. The light was catching the glossiness of the green leaves and making them glow. Then the breeze picked up, and for about ten minutes it seemed like the tree was ablaze. I actually became alarmed, but I realized if the tree really was on fire, there would be smoke, odor, and the leaves would turn black. That didn’t happen.

It got me thinking about the passage in the Bible where God spoke to Moses from the burning bush.

Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire, it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight–why the bush does not burn up.”

When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!”

And Moses said, “Here I am.” ~Exodus 3:1-4 (NIV)

I did not hear from God last night, but the “burning” palm tree sure got my attention. I wonder if the burning bush was also a trick of sunlight.

Later that night, when I checked my email, I saw the announcement of the roundup of entries in the Tuesday Photo Challenge with the prompt Radiance, except that I got confused and thought that Radiance was this week’s theme. So I thought I’d try to capture the tree on fire tonight . . .

. . . but, unfortunately, the conditions weren’t quite the same. I think the critical factor, in addition to the light, is the intensity of the breeze. Tonight’s breeze was softer.

This is the tree that looked like it was on fire last night. Yeah, today, not so much.

And these two trees are in my yard. You can sort of see the “flames” here and there if you let your imagination go. Right? Sort of?

With a little bit of motion you can kind of see the light on the tips of the branches looking like fire . . .

And here’s a little bit more radiance:

Now technically, all of these photos were taken outdoors, which makes them eligible for this week’s challenge. And here’s one more, which I like because of the bird:
