NaPoWriMo Day Eleven: Flower Power

Standard

when we were young
my best friend Kathy
used to buy bouquets of dried flowers
at the grocery store

we’d walk to Sea Bright
where the beach traffic gridlocked every half hour
when the drawbridge opened
to let sailboats through

every car’s windows would be open
to catch the breezes
(this was before air conditioning
was standard equipment)
and Kathy would give drivers
and passengers alike
a flower

to Kathy flowers
were synonymous with peace
the antidote to the war in Vietnam

I’d never known anyonenapo2020button1-1
who’d bought something
for the sole purpose of giving it away
