Elwyn Brooks White was born July 11, 1899. He is best known for three children’s books, Charlotte’s Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan, and as the co-author with William Strunk, Jr. of the writers’ handbook, Elements of Style (affectionately known as Strunk & White). He also wrote poetry, was on staff at the New Yorker where he wrote essays and articles, and was also a columnist for Harpers. He also published other books and won numerous awards for his writing. He passed away in 1985.
