Poetry Comics

Standard

I’ve been following Grant Snider’s Incidental Comics for years. He recently posted an article about making poetry comics, something he does so well, and he inspired me to try one.

I decided to start out by writing a haiku. The 3 lines work well in a three-panel comic. Since the first and third lines contain 5 syllables and the second line contains 7, the lines are short, so they fit nicely.

But as I wrote my poem, I also had to think about the illustrations. There needs to be change from one panel to the next. Here’s what I came up with:

I think I’m going to do more of these. One of my dreams is to write a book of children’s poems and illustrate them myself. Making these little poem-comics would be excellent practice.

Hey, why don’t you try it too? Choose one of the suggestions in Snider’s article, or come up with your own idea. Post on your blog if you have one, or put it on your social media. Then, shoot us a link in the comments below so we can admire your work.
