The Daisy Yellow Index-Card-a-Day Challenge and World Watercolor Month are over. I’m so glad that I participated. I’d love to say I’ll continue making a drawing or a painting every day, but I know I won’t. However, maybe I’ll at least work on an artistic project every other day. (That was my goal for this year–make art on even-numbered days, and write a poem on odd-numbered days. Maybe I can actually do that for the next five months. We’ll see.)

Here are my cards from the last week:

Day 55, using World Watercolor Month prompt for Day 25, Cherry, Lemon & Turquoise, I dropped those colors on a wet watercolor postcard, and this happened:

IMG_0142

Day 56, I responded to  The Daily Post prompt, Tea:

IMG_0143

Day 57’s prompt was Spring. I interpreted it with a zentangle pattern, Msst, which reminds me of Spanish moss:

IMG_0144

For Day 58, I took World Watercolor Month’s prompt of Lollipops:

IMG_0147

Day 59’s prompt was Autumn. I thought of the project we were assigned every November in elementary school, to draw or color a cornucopia:

IMG_0148

For Day 60’s prompt, Winter, I offer a pine branch and cone, one of the few watercolors I did without sketching it out first:

IMG_0149

For Day 61, I went with World Watercolor Month’s prompt, Things with Wings. I used a photograph I took last year when I went to Butterfly Wonderland with my brother, my daughter Erin, and her husband as a reference. I think this is my favorite card this week:

IMG_0150

I missed three days, so I ended up with 58 mini-masterpieces for the two months:

In June and July, I am participating in Daisy Yellow’s Index-Card-a-Day challenge, in which we create a little something on an index card every day–61 mini-masterpieces. And July is World Watercolor Month, so my July cards will feature watercolor. I will be posting my projects every Tuesday.

Day 48’s prompt was intersection. I practiced lots of intersections with a basketweave Zentangle pattern.

IMG_0135

On Day 49 I went with the Week 7 theme of garden and got in touch with my inner Monet.

IMG_0136

Day 50’s prompt was sun.

IMG_0137

Day 51’s prompt was gate. This is my favorite card of the week.

IMG_0138

On Day 52 I chose to use the World Watercolor Month prompt for Day 22, colors of summer. This is a Zentangle pattern called Goldilocks.

IMG_0139

For the last two days, I went rogue (off-prompt). Below is a Zentangle pattern called B-horn. I don’t know the significance of the name. To me it looks like knotty wood.

IMG_0140

This is a Zentangle pattern called Ditto.

I’m having so much fun with these challenges, and you can, too. Only 7 more days–you don’t even have to make up the days you missed. Click the links in the first paragraph for more details.

Day 41’s prompt was roots, and I thought I’d try my hand at a greenman. He looks more like a monkey. Oh, well.

IMG_0126

Day 42’s prompt was onomatopoeia. I decided to go all comic book:

IMG_0128

The next three days I went off prompt. On Day 43 I tried another half-mandala. It’s my favorite card this week:

IMG_0129

On Day 44, I practiced a zentangle pattern, Crux:

IMG_0130

On Day 45, I tried zentangle pattern Quare. It reminded me of an asymmetrical quilt block, so I painted it like an old-fashioned scrap quilt.

IMG_0132

Day 46’s prompt was love:

IMG_0133

And the prompt for World Watercolor Month for Day 17 was running wild. My first thought was to paint a tiger.

Tigers are hard. I painted a toucan instead.

For Day 34 I used the Daily Post prompt, sail. I am also using this card for World Watercolor Month’s Day 5 prompt, summer sky.

IMG_0115

Day 35’s prompt was fav kind of apple. My favorite apple is a pink lady:

IMG_0119

Day 36’s prompt was perfume. I think garlic is one of the best fragrances ever. When you smell garlic, it means something delicious is cooking.

IMG_0120

I’m off prompt for Day 37. I was itching to do some Zentangle. The design below is called bumpkenz.

IMG_0121

Day 38’s prompt was charcoal.

IMG_0123

Day 39’s prompt was ampersand. This card is sloppier than I would like; I should have used a smaller brush.

IMG_0124

I’m off prompt again on Day 40. You had to know I’d eventually draw a unicorn.

Happy birthday, U.S. of A.! And if you’re taking time out of your busy holiday to visit ARHtistic License, thank you for stopping by.

In June and July, I am participating in Daisy Yellow’s Index-Card-a-Day challenge, in which we create a little something on an index card every day–61 mini-masterpieces. And July is World Watercolor Month, so my July cards will feature watercolor. I will be posting my projects every Tuesday.

Day 27’s prompt was farm, which is, of course, the perfect excuse to practice some zentangle:

IMG_0106

Somehow Day 28 just passed me by.

Day 29’s prompt was polka dots. Again, another excuse to practice zentangle. (Plus, I got a new zentangle book and I wanted to try out some designs.) I really like Fracas.

IMG_0108

On Day 30, I chose to use The Daily Post‘s prompt, snack.

IMG_0109

On Day 31, I started constructing a grid for a zentangle pattern, and then I realized I did it incorrectly. Man! Yet, it still kind of fits the prompt, wallpaper. Too bad I forgot it was the first day of World Watercolor Month; I could have done something different with it.

IMG_0110

Day 32’s prompt was dessert.

IMG_0113

And Day 33’s prompt was Orange. This might be my favorite card this week.

In June and July, I am participating in Daisy Yellow’s Index-Card-a-Day challenge, in which we create a little something on an index card every day–61 mini-masterpieces. I will be posting my projects every Tuesday.

Day 20’s prompt was yin/yang. I interpreted it as a composite drawing of my husband, Greg, and me. We’re different, but we complement each other well. We’ve been married thirty-four years.

IMG_0094

This is us in real life (Christmas, 2016, modeling hand-crocheted and knitted gifts from our daughter Erin). I think I captured us in the drawing above.

Greg and Andrea in fashions by Erin

Day 21’s prompt was simplicity. I chose to do double duty with the #LetterfortheLord movement.

IMG_0095

For Day 22 I decided to try my hand at a mandala, because I received a compass kit that I’d ordered. This is officially my favorite card of the week:

IMG_0099

Day 23’s prompt was Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and didn’t get around to doing a card that day, though I knew I wanted to draw the white rabbit. So I drew him on Day 24 instead:

IMG_0100

Day 25’s prompt was portrait. I used a picture on Pinterest as a reference photo:

IMG_0101

Day 26’s prompt was green. It seemed like a good excuse to do more zentangle:

IMG_0104

ICADI’m enjoying this challenge. You can participate, too, and you don’t even have to make up any days you’ve missed. Check the FAQs for more details, and search Instagram for #dyicad2017 to see what other participants have done–they’re amazing, so creative.

In June and July, I am participating in Daisy Yellow’s Index-Card-a-Day challenge, in which we create on an index card every day–61 mini-masterpieces. I will be posting my projects every Tuesday.

Day 6’s prompt didn’t move me, so I referred to the Week 1 theme of hand-lettering for my offering:

IMG_0824

Day 7, Alliteration:

IMG_0823

Day 8’s prompt didn’t inspire me, so I looked at the theme for Week 2: “Inspired by collage, ephemera, found papers, painted papers, old books & magazines.” I cut up an old magazine and made a grid collage:

IMG_0822

Day 9’s prompt was ombré. Here is my experiment in red violet:

IMG_0820

I couldn’t be creative to save my life on Day 10. Sorry.

Day 11’s prompt was tetrahedron. I had to look it up, and I decided to go a different direction. Here’s a variation on a zentangle pattern called facets:

IMG_0819

I didn’t care for Day 12’s prompt, so I drew paisleys instead:

In June and July, I am participating in Daisy Yellow’s Index-Card-a-Day challenge, in which we create on an index card every day–61 mini-masterpieces. I will be posting my projects every Tuesday.

Day 1’s prompt was sunrise, which I chose to interpret in watercolor. It came out more abstract than I intended. And I confess, I made it on a watercolor postcard, not an index card. Last year I was frustrated at how the cards curled when painted.

IMG_0810

Tammy Garcia has a good reason for insisting on using index cards:

Simple materials push you to think in new ways. Index cards are without a doubt “not” the perfect substrate. But they are abundant, so we do not hesitate to pitch them when the work turns into a catastrophe! Get index cards. They can be lined, gridded, plain, neon or dividers or rolodex cards. …The maximum size for the challenge is 4×6″. And yes, gotta be index cards. Not nice paper cut to size. That misses the entire point. We are working with a basic index card, not with a perfect substrate.

I get it. However, my watercolors will be on watercolor postcards.

On Day 3 I thought I’d work with the theme of the week: Inspired by topography, words, hand-lettering, graffiti, found text, definitions, poetry & lists. I thought it would be an excellent excuse to practice my calligraphy. But my Sheaffer pens wouldn’t write well on my Staples index cards. The ink just wouldn’t flow evenly. Three cards pitched, Tammy.

So instead, here’s Found Words Free Verse:

img_0814.jpg

On the other days, the prompts and the theme just didn’t inspire anything for me, so I practiced some of the zentangle designs I’ve saved on my Pinterest board:

Video of the Night: The ICAD Challenge Starts Tomorrow!

I took the Index-Card-a-Day Challenge last year and will be doing it again! If you ever felt you should be creating art but were too intimidated by the immensity of the idea to begin, this challenge is a great way to start. Everyone, no matter how busy, can make a piece of art 3″ x 5″ or 4″ x 6″ in a day. You might even already have some index cards in your desk…

Would you like to see some of my ICAD projects from last year?
