Jesus

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world (John 16:33 NIV).

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Your heart must not be troubled or fearful (John 14:27 HCSB).

Today’s prompt is to write a poem that invokes a specific object as a symbol of a particular time, era, or place.

Peace
originally drafted to promote nuclear disarmament
based on the semaphore signals for N and D

my generation appropriated it to stand
for opposition to the war in Vietnam

it came to be associated with
long hair, love beads, bell bottoms, marijuana

but also with two fingers forming a V
and the general concept of peace

Peace

Live at Peace

If possible, on your part, live at peace with everyone.
Live with everyone.
If possible, peace.
On your part.
It’s up to you.
Know when to hold your tongue,
When to compromise;
When to stand your ground.

What if it’s not possible?
What then?
What if you’re being peaceful, a peacekeeper, a peacemaker,
And others insist on aggression,
Appropriation,
Retaliation?

Bomb them into oblivion?

Live in peace,
Or rest in peace.
