In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat–for he grants sleep to those he loves (Psalm 127:2 NIV).
I’m taking Writing 101: A Poem a Day through WordPress Blogging U. I’m a little behind, but here are the rest of my assignments for the week. I changed Day 4’s prompt from the unit of time to other kinds of seconds.
Sleep
I‘m not an insomniac, Doctor. I sleep all
Night–minutes at a time.
Sometimes hours at a time. I wake, check
Out the clock, and go right back to sleep.
Many times I dream. Annoying, familiar dreams.
Nagging, tedious dreams. Posting-on-Facebook dreams.
In the morning, I wake exhausted and
Anxious as my memories of the night escape.
Seconds
I’ll have another.
(Never the top applicant,
Always second-best.)
Freedom
You who hate my liberty
Have stolen my freedom
Leaving distrust in your wake.
Anyone who looks like you is under suspicion.
Even I am presumed guilty
As I negotiate the airport obstacle course.
If my land is so evil, stay away.
Make your country the envy of mine.
